Like a real
ski-resort all of the action centres around a mountain, in this
case its Mount Gushmore. To get to the top you
have to take a chair lift, which gives you a
fantastic view of the whole park. No infants are
allowed on the chair lift.
According to legend it all came about thanks to a
freak winter storm which dropped a mountain of
snow on Florida, creating the States first winter
ski resort. Due to a rapid meltdown all that's
left of the snow are exhilarating water rides.
The snow-capped centrepiece, Mount Gushmore is
home to the scariest slide in the park
called Summit Plummet, (Min Height 48 inches). It
begins 120 feet in the air on a platform that
looks like a ski jump. It drops you down a steep
free-fall body slide at about 65 miles an hour
and makes nasty wedgies.
There are plenty of other ways to get down the mountain though, for
a slightly gentler ride try the Slush Gusher,
(Min Height 48 inches), still speed sliding
through a snow banked gully, or alternatively race side by side on a
thrilling tube ride that's called Downhill Double
Dipper.
Climb into an inner tube over at Run Off Rapids, and speed
through flumes into watery surprises. You're in a
tube again at Cross-Country Creek, meandering
lazily around the park, but watch out for the ice
cave and some chilling surprises.
Other rides include a bobsled ride called Teamboat Springs, which at
1,200 feet long is the longest and most exiting
flume and family raft ride. On Toboggan Racer you plunge
down snowy slopes on foam toboggans, there is
also a slalom ride Snow Stormers, which is a
toboggan flume ride through slalom gates.
You can then go horizontal and catch some groovy Florida rays on the
beaches of Melt-Away Bay, where waterfalls feed a
one-acre bay with sandy beaches, or you can
bodysurf in the wave-pool.
For the youngsters there's Tike's Peak a small
mountain-like area with short water slides, a
squirting ice-pond with a snow castle and a play
area with rideable critters. Older kids will
enjoy Ski Patrol Training
Camp with its iceberg
obstacle course, ropes for swinging into the
water and plenty more aquatic adventure.
