A collection of
buildings containing the Animal Nursery, the
Petting Zoo, the Elephant Display and the Nairobi
Train Station.
Animal Nursery
A long, low building with glass cages that hold
convalescing animals who are part of the
zoological breeding programme. On the other side
of the cages you can see the food preparation
laboratories. The animals are fed at various
times throughout the day so there is usually
something going on.
Petting Zoo
Goats, sheep, ducks, rabbits, turtles, roosters
and hens are all gathered in this zoo. You can
feed the goats and the sheep, and the other
animals are fed throughout the day.
Elephant Display
The main attraction in Nairobi is a building
housing 22 Asian elephants, which has it's own
swimming pool in which the elephants snort, swim
and get clean, before getting dusty again. At
various points in the day, some of the elephants
are led to the Elephants Wash area, next to the
Kenya Kanteen, where the times are posted and
given a garden hose to give each other, and the
watching audience, a shower.
Trans-Veldt Railroad
An authentic reproduction of an East African
Steam Locomotive. The train chugs around the
Serengeti Plain and then circumnavigates the park
in a 20-minute, 2 ½ mile journey, which stops
near the Congo River Rapids and in Stanleyville.
Myombe Reserve - The
Great Ape Domain
Enter the lush rainforest where gorillas and
chimpanzees can be viewed in a 3-acre
naturalistic habitat. Tour the Great Ape Domain
amid waterfalls and through shrouds of mist and
fog to get an up-close look at these primates.
You can also check out the Aldabra tortoises,
which can weigh more than 500 pounds and live to
be 100 years old. If you visit early in the
morning, or in late afternoon you may catch
feeding time, when both the apes and chimps are
more active.
